The Western-influenced walled house, a former landlord‘s residence built in 1920, was used by the Red Army leaders. Soldiers assembled in the large courtyard. Bedrooms of the various leaders, including Zhou En Lai, are furnished as they were in the 1930s-a simple wooden trestle for a bed covered with a straw mattress and cotton quilt. Straw sandles and an umbrella from that time are also displayed. Some rooms, including the Conference Room, are set out with the landlord‘s original luxurious furniture. Rooms were heated by burning charcoal on stones under the table.
Where Mao became Mao: See the Zunyi Meeting House
Zunyi, a small Chinese city of a few million people in north central Guizhou province is famous for two things: Mao and Moutai.
In 1935 a crucial meeting of the Chinese Communist Party happened here. There‘s a lot more to it, but in a nutshell, after the meeting Mao Zedong was in control of the Party. The Commnists and Nationalists fought many battles in the hills of Guizhou.
For Chinese history buffs, political geeks, or fervent Reds, this is a must-see spot.
You can also climb Red Army Mountain, and see the rest of the historical sites on Red Army Street.
Zunyi is accessible by plane from Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, and Kunming (the new airport was designed to look like the Meeting House), and by direct train or bus from Guiyang, Chengdu, and Chongqing.
