Maotai town
This is a pretty town that is the home of the famous Maotai spirit drink. About an hour or two away by car from Zunyi.The whole town seems to be dependent on the factory.
Maotai (simplified Chinese: 茅台; traditional Chinese: 茅台 or 茅臺; pinyin: Máotái) is a town in the north of Guizhou province, known as the production site of maotai wine and located on the southeast (right) bank of the Chishui River (赤水河). It is under the administration of Renhuai City,[1] As of 2011, it has five residential communities (社区) and eight villages under its administration.
The village is most famous as the origin of the eponymous brand of baijiu. The liquor is one of the most universally popular in China.[3] Maotai is the only alcoholic beverage presented as an official gift by Chinese embassies in foreign countries and regions, and it received worldwide exposure when Zhou Enlai used the liquor to entertain Richard Nixon during the state banquet for the U.S. presidential visit to China in 1972
When we come to Maotai liquor, you have to talk about Maotai Town, which is famous for making Maotai. Maotai Town has always been a famous town in northern Guizhou Province. It is located on the bank of Chishui River in Renhuai City, surrounded by mountains and in a dangerous situation. Maotai Town is called the sacred place of Chinese liquor, and the liquor industry in the area has flourished. In 1915, Maotai Liquor won the gold medal at the Panama World Expo. In 1935, the Red Army of the Chinese Workers and Farmers crossed the Chishui River in Maotai during their long march. Maotai Town combines ancient salt culture, Long March culture and liquor culture, and is known as "China‘s No. 1 Liquor producer."
It is reported that as early as 135 BC, the ancient Maotai area produced a fruit liquor that Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty found “the sweetest”. That fruit liquor was the predecessor of Maotai as we know it.
